Also known as a mastopexy, this procedure both lifts the nipple-areola complex back to its original, youthful position and reshapes the breast to redistribute the breast tissue to occupy emptying of the upper pole. This commonly occurs following weight loss or following breastfeeding.
Breast reduction is often performed to make your breasts proportional to your body. If you suffer from overly-large, saggy breasts you’ll know how it hard it can be to do normal activities like running, playing sports or exercising. Over-large breasts can cause back pain, neck pain, headaches, and postural problems. In addition, rashes and infections may form on the underside of the breast. A breast reduction can help alleviate these symptoms as well as reshape and enhance the shape of your breasts and nipples.
Following total mastectomy or lumpectomies for cancer, procedures can be performed to restore the breast shape. Reconstructions may use the patients own tissue (autologous) or be implant-based (alloplastic) reconstructions. Sometimes a combination of the two is used. Each reconstruction is uniquely tailored to the patient’s body and desires, as well as sensitive to their cancer treatment regimes.
Nipple reconstructions and areolar tattooing are also performed. Fat grafting is a useful tool in addressing volume loss following radiotherapy or lumpectomy.
Excessive male chest tissue is often a combination of fibrous breast tissue and fat, colloquially known as ‘man boobs’. Sometimes, this can be addressed solely with liposuction, however, often when this is combined with small open resection of the fibrous component, the best results are achieved.
WILL I EXPERIENCE SCARRING?
Unfortunately, scarring will occur after a breast lift. Doctors try their best to ensure that scarring is minimal and inconspicuous as possible. If your scarring is a cause of concern for you, there are plenty of options available out there that treat scars and minimise their appearance.
HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS
You will be cleared for certain activities at certain stages of your recovery. You will be cleared to return to work after one week and your pain will have significantly declined by this time. By four weeks you will feel healed enough to resume most activities and by your sixth week, your bruising and swelling will have almost completely subsided. Six weeks usually marks the completion of the recovery process.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE SURGERY?
Prior to surgery you should get detailed instructions from your surgeon’s office. You should stop smoking and taking aspirin two weeks prior. It is also recommended to discontinue any herbal supplements as well or anything that could increase the risk of bleeding. You should also prepare for your recovery period by making the necessary arrangements for family or friends to drive you home after your surgery and help out with young children (if you have any) during your recovery.
WHAT KIND OF SCAR SHOULD I EXPECT?
Scarring after this procedure is to be expected. Usually periareolar (about 2.5 cm scar in the lower part of the areola) that is generally inconspicuous. Sometimes, tiny scars remain in the armpit or chest after liposuction. Some people need more extensive procedures, and this should be discussed with your surgeon in detail prior to surgery. If the scarring concerns you, you may wish to consider various scar removal options such as laser.
HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I TAKE OFF FROM WORK?
This depends on the type of work you do and the extent of the surgical procedure. Usually it’s between 3 and 10 days, but healing time varies for each individual and should be discussed with your surgeon.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE SURGERY?
Prior to surgery you should get detailed instructions from your surgeon’s office. Pre-operative testing is mandatory. You should stop medications such as blood thinner, aspirin, Advil, Vitamin E and herbal remedies such as St. John’s Wort and Ginkgo Biloba. Do not eat or drink eight (8) hours prior to surgery. Arrive on the day of surgery in comfortable clothing that is not tight or confining. Have a responsible person accompany you to and from the doctor’s office.
In some cases, surgeries like breast reduction and breast reconstruction can be covered by Medicare. An example of this is breast reduction when it can help to alleviate pain, headaches and posture problems.
Typically, you would need to discuss this with your doctor and then Medicare will inform you of the necessary paperwork you would have to fill out for the surgery to be covered. Depending on your situation, Medicare and private health funds may offer some rebate for plastic surgery procedures deemed medically necessary.
